About me

I was born and raised on the banks of the River Severn in Gloucestershire. This was the environment which influenced my artistic journey when I started painting in retirement. I have recently moved to the banks of Loch Fyne in the Cowal Peninsula, Scotland, I am excited by the inspiration my beautiful and completely different new surroundings have to offer me.

I am a self-taught artist who chose early on to use watercolour, attracted by its challenges and the often magical, results that can occur. I particularly embrace its unpredictability and let water and pigment do what they will with sometimes little intervention on my part. I find trying to control it saps the energy of the painting. Occasionally, I use ink as well as watercolour and employ various techniques to provide texture and interest.

I recently migrated into more expressive intuitive work and have almost entirely abandoned brushwork in favour of liquid watercolour or neat pigment, water spray and manipulation with bamboo pen and palette knife marks.
My fascination with watercolour draws me to continue my journey of exploring, experimenting and re-evaluation of it.

I paint exclusively in the studio, having absorbed the essence of the natural world as I immerse myself in the
sketches, photographs and notes of colour, sounds and feelings from my surroundings
