About Angela Scrivin

I’m Angela Scrivin, a self-taught watercolour artist based on the shore of Loch Fyne on Scotland’s Cowal Peninsula. My paintings are inspired by the colours, textures and atmosphere of the natural world—and by the unpredictable character of watercolour itself.

I was born and raised on the banks of the River Severn in Gloucestershire, where I developed a lasting connection with landscape and nature. I began painting after retiring, and that familiar riverside environment helped shape my early artistic journey. Since moving to Loch Fyne, I have found fresh inspiration in the very different landscape of Scotland’s west coast.

I was drawn to watercolour because it is both challenging and surprising. I enjoy allowing water and pigment to move and interact freely, often with minimal intervention. Trying to control the medium too closely can take the energy out of a painting. I sometimes introduce ink and use a range of techniques to create texture, movement and expressive marks.

In recent years, my work has become increasingly intuitive. I have largely moved away from conventional brushwork in favour of liquid watercolour or neat pigment, using water spray, bamboo pens and palette knives to guide and manipulate the paint.

Although I work in my studio, each painting begins with time spent observing the natural world. Sketches, photographs and notes about colour, light, sound and feeling help me carry the essence of a place back into the studio. Rather than reproduce a scene exactly, I aim to capture something of its atmosphere and emotional character.

My fascination with watercolour continues to lead me towards new ways of exploring, experimenting and re-evaluating what the medium can do.
